CEPPWAWU Press Statement, 15 September 2017

Sector Impasse could go to Strike Action

The Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union (CEPPWAWU)
has locked horns with one employer, Mpact, at the National Bargaining Council
for the Wood and Paper Sector. This employer has stubbornly refused to signed a
settlement offer agreed by all other parties.

Mpact is ignoring the recommendation of the Commissioner of the Bargaining
Council, arrived during negotiations between the employer association of the
Pulp and Paper Industry, and the Labour Unions.

CEPPWAWU calls upon Mpact not to define itself outside of the collective. The
company knows full well that the whole Paper industry is under very serious
economic stress. Mpact knows that the same stress affects the employees more
than it affects the employers. Workers have already sacrificed.

Deadlock

Mpact's unwillingness to follow the Commissioner's recommendation has resulted
in the deadlock of negotiations. There is now an impasse involving the other
main employers, Mondi, SAPPI and Lignotec, and unions, including CEPPWAWU.

The three companies that were willing to finalise the matter are now unable or
unwilling to do so, because of Mpact's intransigence.

All other parties are willing to settle at 7%. Mpact is holding out for a
miserable 6.35% - hardly a difference worth fighting over.

Workers in the sector are solidly behind their just demand. In the absence of
movement from Mpact, the next step for workers is to consider industrial action.
