Judge Billy Mothle said Mr Timol was assaulted and tortured from his arrest until his death. "Timol did not jump out of the window of room 1026, but was either pushed out of the window, or from the roof," the judge said. "Thus he did not commit suicide but was murdered." The breakthrough in unity after 10 years of schism came after two days of talks in the Egyptian capital. Egyptian Intelligence Minister Khalid Fawzi presided over the signing by Hamas representative Saleh al-Arouri and Fatah negotiator Azzam al-Ahmed. The deal was a reactivation of the unity pact signed in Cairo in May 2011 that was fiercely opposed by occupying Israel. - https://tinyurl.com/ychmdq3z US Leaves Unesco for 'Anti-Israel Attitudes' The US announced yesterday it was leaving UN heritage agency Unesco over its alleged "anti-Israel bias." Spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the US would downgrade its membership to "permanent observer" status." The US stopped payments to Unesco in 2011 after the agency allowed Palestine to join and now owes $550 million (£420m). The agency has been critical of Israel's illegal excavations of sites on occupied Palestinian territory, including in East Jerusalem, as well as its demolition of Byzantine and Arab buildings in the ancient city. - https://tinyurl.com/ybw7jq88 Basic Education Portfolio Committee Notes All Initiatives to Ensure Safety in Schools Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Basic Education received presentations on safety in schools in the country where bullying and corporal punishment dominated the agenda. Acting Committee Chairperson, Ms Pinky Mokoto, said, "There is no way that learners can learn when the environment is contaminated by violence." The Committee noted that the Department of Basic Education has received a notice of a strike by SADTU on Tuesday. According to the authors, chronic underfunding of the public system is one of the main causes. This weakens public education and facilitates the entry of other providers. Private schools surveyed largely employ untrained teachers with a high turnover ratio. But in Nepal, almost 1 in 5 of all school-going children are now enrolled in for-profit private schools. The ANCWL applauds the parents who reported this matter to the police. They acted swiftly. The alleged perpetrator was arrested. But Egypt's official Mena news agency said the deal with the Army of Islam, Jaysh al-Ababil and Aknaf Beit al-Maqdis did not include the Syrian government. The agreement covers the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp. On Wednesday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem called Turkey's incursion into Idlib province to support the Free Syrian Army "illegal." He also said the Kurdish YPG militia was "drunk on US assistance and support.
