Hi,

Many people don't care much for web ads.

It seems to me that it would be in the self-interest of companies to
advertise in a less annoying way.

On del.icio.us, this could be done by having companies compete to
provide helpful/timely bookmarks. Those that do well in this regard
would be rewarded in much the same way that users are rewarded by
CollaborativeRank for example:

* a higher ranking overall
* a higher ranking with respect to a query
* greater influence on search result rankings
* being identified as a major contributor to the importance of a search result

Such rewards provide visibility for the company, but it would be clear
that this visibility has been earned by being helpful to the
del.icio.us community -- and so the visibility would be less annoying
than paid advertising .

Of course, it's not as simple as allowing del.icio.us users to specify
(and promote) the company at which they work. These things must be
checked so that people from competing companies for example don't give
other companies a bad name.

In any case, this idea can be applied to other services as well such
as yahoo answers.

Amir

P.S. Of course, this idea can complement paid advertising. A company
might even advertise using both methods.
