We talked about this ourselves- one issue is that many people save private bookmarks to intranet sites which are not visible to our machines, so these would show up as 'dead'. Also, most news sites don't actually return a 404 when an article is taken down, but instead a pretty error page which is still a valid page.
So we have thought about the problem but haven't thought of any clear solutions.
