The PS3 running YDL looks promising as a workstation for numerically
intensive programming, though with relatively low level tools at
present. As I understand it, the current generation of Cell Processor
chips aren't yielding well enough to produce enough chips with eight
functional SPEs, so the PS3 will be shipping with one SPE disabled, and
one is reserved for OS use, leaving six available for user
applications. Is this correct?

If so what is the OS using the SPE for?

Have any of the applications shipping with YDL 5 been modified to take
advantage of the SPEs? If so, which ones?

Regards,
Steve
