I think this may interest you: http://www.ics.uci.edu/~franz/Site/pubs-pdf/ICS-TR-06-17.pdf This system is built from the interpreter only JamVM but similar systems should be possible with cluster/distributed JVMs such as dJVM and JESSICA.
