Warren, I've done the hugetbl/hugepages mods a couple of times on a PS3 without having any problems. The last time was with Fedora 7 (needed to play with SDK3.0). I didn't use the kernel from the cell addon, but one from Geoff's page (don't have the link handy, but should be google-able [is that a word?]). Did you make a new initrd image from your new kernel? It sounded like you didn't from your email. I don't know if that would make a huge difference or not, I don't normally make an initrd when booting my G5, but it seems most of the x86 distro's I've used and the PS3 use it.
Rob -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] on behalf of Warren Nagourney Sent: Wed 11/14/2007 10:53 PM To: Discussion List for General Yellow Dog Linux User Topics Subject: [ydl-gen] Kernel hacking For a number of reasons, I have gone into the kernel hacking business in YDL 5.02 on a PS3 and started by taking the 2.6.23 kernel (from the most recent CELL linux ADDON iso) and compiling it, following the instructions in the Cell Performance article on making huge pages. I made the appropriate changes in the kboot.conf file to reflect the new kernel and tried to boot. SInce this is my first attempt at kernel manufacture, I was not surprised that it didn't work: I got an error message "switchroot: mount failed" and a kernel panic. I looked at the init file in the initrd image and compared it to the one in the initrd for a working kernel: they were identical (not surprising, since the same mkinitrd was probably used for both). Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
