Thanks - played around with a lot of combinations and finally mode 5 (1080p) seems to work best. My monitor doesn't support this resolution but scales it down to something that seems to be the best compromise between resolution and on-screen size of fonts/icons/windows. Weirdly, the default yellow dog wallpaper has shifted diagonally downwards to that the top corner (and the icons) is almost in the middle of the screen. When I created a new user the wallpaper is properly centred??
