Gee Cian:

I've never met anyone who is an expert in all the areas of human endeavor and scholarship. I also don't recall seeing a stipulation requiring users of the YDL list to be experts with documented Masters or Doctorate degrees any area of scholarship. What I have read is that one take or engage in a reasonable amount of discourse regarding YDL issues in a congenial manner within one's skill and capacity for contribution based upon what resources one can discover or those resources/skills one has developed.

It goes without explanation that different persons with different skills will present or refer to different resources. Perhaps some resources referred to will be simplistic for some, whereas the same information will be considered by others exceedingly complex. Having participated here for quite some period I've learned to attempt addressing questions at the level they are presented and no farther, encouraging one pursue the matter on their own in more detail if one is so inclined.

When I do come across some areas which I'm not overly familiar with I do resort to doing some reading regarding a project at their website. Some of what I discover when I visit a project's website is an educational experience for me; sometimes I decide it really is best to merely refer someone to the website so they are empowered to decide for themselves what they need and perhaps contact the developers themselves regarding more questions if they are inclined to do so.

I don't see a problem with what I wrote within it's context. Certainly the designer's of xine are well aware of what they can do and I'm very sure that they are competent regarding their own project to address technical questions regarding any components they use or design which may arise regarding whatever they support, as well as why or why not.

With due respect to whatever your skills and knowledge base may be, I don't see what your complaint really is about in this context. I referred the individual to the xine project and mailing list for further information.

In my view, to use an analogy, I've referred someone commenting upon a certain model car to that manufacturer while making a passing comment about the wheels (or any other part) it uses. It appears that you are engaged upon educating me that I should know the specifics regarding those wheels (or any other part). That's fine as far as it goes; that specific knowledge is beyond my current expertise, but really don't you think that the consumer, or here in our context a potential user, should be able to discover direct from the manufacturer (or here the project) the exact specifics?

Really, Cian, why isn't that enough?

Anyway, you could join their mailing list and submit a feature request.
It shouldn't be a big deal as they support WMV. They have other
backends, you could also explore those at their website. The variety
however is rather easy to get lost in.

Derick - its an absolutely massive deal, there is close to zero
information on how the codec works, and its completely different from
the old WMV1 and WMV2 codecs. They cannot support it easily, at all.
They also, as every other media player does, get their Windows Media
Everything support from FFmpeg, not any codecs of their own. I suggest
you do some research before posting in future...
