A machine restart cures a world of hurt and in your case I'd say the problem was not with the script nor Entourage but with the AppleScript system built into Mac OS X. Restarts are simple and safe to do and they clean out a lot of cruft that builds up over time with use. Are restarts warranted for every problem? Certainly not. But they are important for troubleshooting a problem because you know that after a restart everything is "reset". Your memory is clear, some of your caches are cleared, temp items left over from other installers or applications are gone, your Mac OS system is reloaded fresh, etc. Putting your machine in this "known good state" is really the most important reason for a restart.
