joe...howdi hoo..and  group!

billllll is reading it on net... great you read" perennial philosophy"...we are
on the same wave length
...i have a copy next to me as i type..
brilliant..huxley is a genius
..i read the island when i was a kid...i was addicted to english children
writer enid blyton  as a kid..i devoured all her books...
then i though shit what the hell is there to read...went to library as a kiddy
of maybe 12... and thought "the island" was an adventure book..
read it and was totally awe struck...then went to high school and anything the
english class dished up was boring as..bloody "pride and prejudice"..
jane austen..boring compared to huxley..
though saying that i love the bbc rendition of pride and prejudice... all that
romance and the settings.. beautiful...except it's not hard core enough for
me...

i could never understand why "the island" was not studied at high schools..
they did his other what i term lighter novels..interesting but not as full
blown as "the island"..
i asked an english teacher once..why?..too hard core... right...and what
shakespeare was not hard core?......
i did my own reading and investigations in art school and teacher's
college...mostly i was bored to the teeth with the set courses...

i never met anyone interested in zen buddhism which i began investigating in
early 20's...
this is the only time here i have met folk who actually are interested in zen...
so the internet was widened my communication ability big time... living on top
of this mountain can be very isolating...
i thank you for your continued communication and your friendship  and support..
sometimes i get shitty and think why the hell do i bother with this
group...when the arguments begin..however only this morn i thought..not a bad
bunch
..at least we hopefully agree to disagree eh?....

so group..thank you..all your communications i do take aboard and am stronger
for them..
very much in appreciation..
i might appear of the zen radar at times..
but do bare in mind i am the forever rebellious type..i like to stir the honey
pot...
 take it easy group.
enjoy the moment..as billlllllll says NOW...
and i finish with a meow...

merle from down under( australia)

Bill!, Merle,

I read ISLAND in my twenties, about two years after I had begun studying
Hinduism and practicing Yoga intensively. It made a big impression, and was
fun. It was "nice" to encounter so many of the Hindu ideas and figures in the
book, like old friends, but in a new and unexpected setting. I was already
well familiar with Huxley through his DOORS..., and a few other things,
especially THE PERENNIAL PHILOSOPHY, which is non-fiction (mostly). ;-)

It would be fun to pick up THE ISLAND again; a big used book store is three
blocks from me (but the house is already unduly loaded with books; it's past
time I sold some of them BACK). I'll keep it in the back of my mind to pick up
a copy. Used books can be had for one or two dollars. Of course, there are
libraries.
