Mike,

I know of two mudras commonly taught and used in Zen practice in communal
sangha situations, such as at Zen centers or monasteries. Practitioners learn
these there, and use them there, and might continue their use wherever they
practice, if they practice sitting and walking, elsewhere.

One is the Zazen mudra, sometimes also called the "Dhyani" mudra in Sanskrit,
but we could thus call it the Ch'an mudra, or Zen mudra, I think; and the other
is the Kinhin mudra, also called "Shashu" in Japanese.

We can talk about the physical effects and physical reasons for the mudras, and
we can talk about the symbolism.

This post is just a start for me, and maybe a placeholder or bookmark. I'll
get back to it later. Must dash now and continue planting some trees. Cool
morning in the desert.
