how can I put a real server in mainteinance mode?where is the option?

strange, i put a real server into maintenance mode to test it, but
when it returns all the items for that farm are label as "-1" and the
actions icons are all gone, so basically you can't manage anything else.
It seems to be putting the whole farm into maintenance mode, not just
the selected server.
I remove the XXX_status.cfg files and the controls returned. the icons
reappeard

there are more issues, but please confirm it is not my setup.
