I think your answer is in the documentation:
http://www.zenloadbalancer.org/doc/ZenLB%20administration%20guide.html#__Ref
Heading__120_1492156884
By default Zen Load balancer checks the tcp backends port status, but
sometimes this check its not enough to conclude that the backend status is
working fine. To solve this problem Zen Load Balancer implement a way to
execute an advanced and personalized backends checks called Farm Guardian.
With this advanced monitoring application you can develope your own
personalized scripts or use some avaliable scripts under the
/usr/local/zenloadbalancer/app/libexec/ directory.
So, since you have L4XNAT for all ports, I don't think that anyone would
know what ports to use to check statuses of your servers. In this case the
only option is FarmGuardian.

Subject: [Zenloadbalancer-support] ZenLB 3.03 l4xnat farm, not detecting
failed node
I set up a ZenLB cluster to protect my CAS array. I set it up as a l4xnat
farm, with connections based on priority, and the NAT mode set to NAT.

A few times now, one node in the CAS has gone down, which is the reason I
set up the CAS to begin with--to give me time to replace the failing node
correctly.
Each time though, Zen didn't kick over the working node automatically, I had
to manually change the priority.
The documentation online is all for the older version. What am I doing
wrong?
Do I need to set up FarmGuardian? It looked to me like that was only for
more specific protection, such as checking for a specific running service.
Alternatively, would this be better set up as a TCP farm and set up the farm
for each separate port I want to protect?
This is a 2-node ZenLB cluster. One node is on Hyper-V 2008R2, the other on
Hyper-V 2012. Both are using the native NIC drivers provided by Debian.
