Abraham,
We have a cluster, and we use Nagios to check all the IP addresses that the
cluster uses using the check_ping command. This will usually tell us when
either of the nodes goes down, because even if the virtual IPs fail over to
the other node, the actual ip for the node that failed won't respond.
If you wanted to be safer, you could set up a check_tcp command on the port
that they use for cluster communication. I couldn't find this in the docs,
but I believe, it's port 22.
Anything beyond that, you'd have to set up some sort of NRPE check that
runs a script to check the zen logs or something else clever in order to
determine whether the cluster is up.
Alex's solution seems a lot more comprehensive, but just in case you have
to use Nagios...
