Hi!
I would suggest a graceful shutdown of real servers for both L7 and L4 farms.
Ether setting a timeout for the servers manually or let run out all connections
and after that put the server in maintenance mode automatically.
I would also suggest a maintenance mode for a real server for all farms. This
would make it easier to patch a server which is used in many farms.
