You have three options for monitoring,

1) SNMP
2) SSH
3) WMI

I think you're going to have bite the bullet and install something...
Zenoss is good, but it's not magic :-)

Also, if SNMP is enabled but uses non-standard config, Zenoss won't pick
it up either, by default Zenoss uses UDP port 161 and a community string
of 'public'.  This can be changed, but most devices uses these
parameters out of the box.  If your devices are the other side of
routers or firewall, make sure UDP port 161 is open.
