It was not possible in Zenoss 1.1.2. You could not use a transform as a threshold. Instead you have to set a fixed value. In my experience, the toner level measurement on printers has a built in minimum level. Once it reads below that level (say 500 grams), it just reports empty (which on most of my printers is a -2 value.) I've got an absolute threshold of 200 set.
