I've seen very similar odd behavior as well with v. 2.1 pertaining to Windows servers... I've found that modeling a windows device doesn't actually run the windows modeler... But if I shell out and run zenwinmodeler by hand, it pulls them... But the zenwinmodeler does end with a ton of trace-back errors, but it appears to work okay...
I'd love to provide more debug output from these errors if anyone was interested in looking at them... Just let me know what you need.
