Ok, I followed your suggestion and then tried a few things.
After making the change you suggested, I removed the offending device
and the one alerting rule that was in place (I did not want that to be
the source of any issues). Zenoss was fine over the weekend.
I added the machine back in on Monday and let it run over night. The
next day things still seemed fine so I added another machine (our
internet content filter). Later that afternoon, Zenoss started in with
the lost heartbeat messages again.

Looking at the log, it appears that the border router is at it again:

        2008-08-06 16:37:36 ERROR zen.ZenModeler: Client
asbr0.ip.shastalink.k12.ca.us finished: [Failure instance: Traceback
failure with no frames): twisted.spread.pb.PBConnectionLost: [Failure
instance: Traceback (failure with no frames):
twisted.internet.error.ConnectionLost: Connection to the other side
was lost in a non-clean fashion: Connection lost.
        ]
        ]

Today I removed both new devices and restarted Zenoss
        /etc/init.d/stack-zenoss stop
        /etc/init.d/stack-zenoss stop
        Kill two processes that remained up
        /etc/init.d/stack-zenoss start

And I will watch to see if the system stabilizes or if I continue to
have problems. Assuming things get stable again, I will put our
internet content filter back in and see what happens.

I apreciate any suggestons you may have. Obviously our border routers
are fairly important and I would like to monitor them (although, if they
go down I have plenty of users who will notify me ;-) )

Thanks;
James
