I have had another go around this loop of writing a Zenoss batch loader - with thanks for more input from Scott and Jim. It now assumes that you have local access to Zenoss rather than running largely through the ServerProxy mechanism. It seems to have made the database commits much more stable and has made the usage easier (ie no userid, password, Zenoss host parameters needed).
The piece that didn't work earlier to optionally call a zenmodel now seems to work. It also now handles data files that specify multiple groups and multiple systems for a device.
