Arrgh! I've tried many different options for the TALES expression here, and in
the process have seen this error message: "CompilerError: $ must be doubled or
followed by a simple path". So, it seems that the TALES used here only accepts
"path expressions", for which I don't think there is any way to get what I
need, short of extending the TALES namespace!
Now, if it supported TALES Python expressions here, then I could get the date
values directly with a line like "python:
__import__('datetime').date.today().year"...
