I too get this error, but not on an upgrade. I have verified that MYSQL is running and I can connect to it as the root user. I am using Fedora Core 8. At teh end of the installation, it reports that it cannot connect to mysql with the same failure reported in teh top post......I used to run Zenoss on this same machine (version 2.1.72).
