You hit the nail right on the head.  This is exactly the problem, and 
completely makes sense now that you have described it.  I've just recently 
started playing with Zenoss so am still getting familiar with it.  Of course on 
the Cisco Routers, ethernet sub interfaces don't have error counters, so those 
would be considered bad OID's, by creating a new template;

Layer 2 Virtual LAN using 802.1Q by copying ethernetCsmacd as suggested

and deleting;

 ifInErrors     1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.14
 ifOutErrors    1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.20

should take care of my issue.  Now just to wait out the little grey events to 
go away on their own.  I also deleted the associated performance graph to 
finish the job.
