hello all,
Thank you for time on this issue i am new to the zenoss world, and have been
tasked by my department to find a way to monitor several application pools and
installs on several different machines and platforms. So far i have not been
able to come up with any direct (or indirect way to do this) i have read
through all the docs, an the enterprise Zenpack info as well as the developers
guide and admin guide.
i also should note i am NOT a programmer, and i really only understand basic
code and theory (i did download some intro to python docs and have been
studying those)
what we are needing to do is monitor and develop reports that show the CPU,
memory, I/O, network, and disk usage of several different applications on mixed
hardware. some are clusters of Microsoft servers, Linux(RHE5), and SUN Solaris,
others are standalone servers
an example would be
Clear Case, this software lives on several different servers throughout our
network both windows, and *NIX cluster instances and standalone as well. there
is a need to monitor the resource usage of this "program".
things i have been tasked to workout
1: how do i monitor the "Clear Case" on several different servers this to
include
a: cpu and memory usage as a percent of the whole
b: hard disk usage
c: io throughput
d: network throughput
2: how can i "pool" this information for an average usage based on "program"
name, as well as total % used on the resource pool.
a: can i create reports that reflect an aggregated usage as well as server
specific usage?
b: can i mix and match platforms hardware and software that i create the
report for?
currently i am able to do the basic stuff that the default install of Zenoss
included and i am starting to figure out how to add different stuff to the
monitoring system
i currently have
network (classA) and subnets
Switches
Firewalls
Gateways
Routers
Servers, Win and *NIX
printers
NetApp Sans (currently 4 separate san environments)
VMWare ESX4 virtual environment
so far everything is being monitored for the basic, how much, how fast, and
how long. I am able to fumble through adding devices and creating services
defining events and that stuff' but i a bit more than a little lost here. any
help would be great even if its pointing me in the direction i need to go
Thanks all
Peace Out
