I have done some more tuning that made a HUUUGE difference. The short solution is that I severely reduce the number of events that zeneventlog (the Windows event log scanner) picks up and puts into the Zenoss events database. Essentially, Zenoss now only retrieves Windows events of type (severity) Warning or Error. It was the incredibly massive number of Security log events that Zenoss choked on.
