'If a developed country like the US has reservation for the Blacks, then why can't we?'

Kolkata, April 19: Ramvilas Paswan, union minister for chemical & fertilizer and steel, has asked the private sector to fall in line with the Centre's proposal of introducing reservations in the private sector.

"I appeal to the industries to come forward and take part in the issue. The government has a commitment to keep. Even a developed country like the US has reservation for the Blacks. Then why can't we?" said Paswan.

In Kolkata, the Lok Janshakti Party is contesting elections from nine constituencies in coordination with the Congress. Paswan told Newsline that the Union is formulating a policy to introduce reservations in the private sector. He made it clear that the policy is likely to cover not only the joint ventures, public-private partnership, but also private companies.

Paswan, addressing a media gathering at the press club, said that West Bengal has failed to fill in the vacancies reserved for the candidates of the backward classes. "Our party has pro-poor policies, and we hold that for West Bengal as well, he said.

Following the footsteps of LK Advani, senior BJP leader, Paswan is also gearing up to undertake a rath-yatra. Commencing May 3, the "Dalit-Minority Unity Yatra", shall begin from Bulandshahar. Covering major towns in Uttar Pradesh, Paswan will hold a party meeting at New Delhi's Talkatora stadium on May 6. The yatra is expected to conclude on May 24, in Allahabad. Wooing minorities in Uttar Pradesh, as he did in Bihar, Paswan has said that his party is in favour of projecting a minority candidate, preferably a Muslim, as the chief ministerial candidate when UP goes to polls next time. Harping on the Dalit-Muslim vote bank, Paswan said that the Trinamool Congress would have gained and would have drawn wide support before the polls, had it parted ways with the BJP.
