Villagers stay in hut, use modern toilets

BY TIRTHA NEUPANE

THULADIHI, SYANGJA, March 19 - Nanda Bahadur Sunam of Mandanda VDC
lives in a hut, but he has built a concrete toilet with modern
facilities. "Toilet is the symbol of the persons' civilization but the
house is not," says a confident Sunam, pointing towards his small hut,
where his family lives. The hut costs not more than Rs 5,000 while the
toilet they have been using was built after spending Rs 12,000.
Sunam says he built the toilet two years ago with support from the
Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) that loaned him Rs 2,000, and the
remaining expenses were borne by the family.

He was the first to build such a modern toilet in the village as he
was selected as the poorest dalit in the area.

"Others soon followed," he added. Altogether there are 32 dalit
families in the village. Fifteen of them have modern toilets.

"Earlier, no-one preferred using toilets. They would answer natures
call in the open fields before NRCS started helping them in building
toilets," said Rajendra Sunam, of NRCS. But after the support from
NRCS they started constructing and using toilets.
