QUOTA-ORISSA
Orissa to move SC seeking quota retention

BHUBANESWAR, APR 24 (PTI)
The Orissa government has decided to move the Supreme Court seeking
retention of 27 per cent reservation in jobs for OBCs.

"We will go to the Supreme Court for the 27 per cent quota for the
OBCs," Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik told reporters here today.

The state government's decision to go on appeal to the apex court was
prompted by the recent Orissa High Court decision upholding the order
of the Cuttack bench of the State Administrative Tribunal (SAT) that
reservation in public services could not exceed 50 per cent.

As per the government's reservation policy, the reservation for SC and
ST in employment was 16.25 per cent and 22.5 per cent respectively
accounting for 38.75 per cent.

In 1994, the Orissa government also extended 27 per cent reservation
in posts and services to OBC and socially and educationally backward
classes (SEBC) keeping in view the central policy.

This reservation was made following the Indira Sahani case in the apex
court where the limit of 50 per cent reservation for all categories
was pronounced, the SC, ST Development, Minorities and Backward
Classes Development minister Chaitanya Prasad Majhi said.
