Mayawati to launch 'Mayayug' soon 6 Jun, 2007 l 0136 hrs ISTlSubodh Ghildiyal/TIMES NEWS NETWORK NEW DELHI: After storming to power by decimating her rivals, BSP supremo Mayawati is set to announce the beginning of her era with a monthly news magazine, tentatively titled 'Mayayug'. To be the new mouthpiece of the Dalit outfit, Mayayug is being modelled on other glossy news weeklies in terms of inspiration, approach and treatment of issues. But wider significance lies in the fact that the Dalit outfit, often alleging a bias against it by the mainstream media, is finally launching its in-house production to address that long-held grievance. Mayayug will treat socio-political events with an in-house perspective but sources said it will have "all contents". While the magazine will be manned by insiders, it is to be seen if BSP will hire a "mainstream professional" to edit it like its inspirations. Sources said the magazine will be priced to make it affordable and acceptable to a wider public, most importantly to the lower-segment party sympathisers. But for those in the know, the significance of BSP's journalistic venture means a final goodbye to Kanshi Ram era with Mayawati stepping into the leadership slot with firm steps. Mayayug will phase out the original BSP organ Bahujan Sangathak, launched by the party founder in 1980s. While it was staid, like traditional political organs, Sangathak played an important part in carrying party leadership's message to the workers in a pure form. It was launched in Marathi, Telugu and Hindi but only the Hindi version has survived.
