'Caste-based quota no use to Muslims'

Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM: The State Government's decision to go ahead with the
'caste-based' reservations for Muslims in the State w'ould not be of
any use to the Muslim community, the Federation of All Mosque, Burial
Grounds, Idgahs, Dargas, and Madrasasas' leaders opine.

Reacting to the Government decision to provide four per cent
reservations to 15 Muslim groups considered "socially and
educationally backward" while excluding the creamy layer among the
community in jobs and professional colleges at a press conference here
on Saturday, former MLA S.A. Rahman said that the State Government had
proposed the reservations for Muslims without doing the home work
properly although earlier twice the Muslim reservations was rejected
by the High Court. "It is doing the same thing a third time. This has
hurt the sentiment of Muslims. Muslims all over the world are equal.
There is no distinction of caste, colour or race among them.
Therefore, creating distinction among them for reservations is
improper. There is no caste system in Islam."

General Secretary of Kota Veedhi Mosque, Iqtidar Hussein, who also
spoke said that even B.R. Ambedkar said only profession, should be the
criterion for reservation and not caste.
