Voluntary action better, says industry

P. K. Bhardwaj

Opposed to law on job quota

NEW DELHI: Captains of Indian industry on Saturday once again conveyed
to the Government their opposition to any legislation on reservation
in the private sector while indicating their willingness to review and
enhance their commitment to provide jobs and education to the
Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes. They also agreed to
intensify their efforts to develop the skill sets of these sections of
people.

Putting across their point of view during the second meeting of the
Coordination Committee to promote Affirmative Action in the Indian
Industry presided over by Principal Secretary to Prime Minister T.K.A.
Nair, presidents and past presidents of three apex chambers maintained
that voluntary action would yield better results than an act of
Parliament.

There was reiteration of general agreement that there should be
positive discrimination in employment in favour of SC/ST persons —
other things being equal, they would be given preference. This
approach should result in sizeable increase in their employment.

Industry captains agreed that they would include reporting of data on
the new employment for SCs/STs created during the year in the code of
conduct being prescribed for their members.

While it will meet again after two months to review the progress made
in implementing the decision, the committee took note of the fact that
CII and ASSOCHAM had finalised a code on affirmative action and
circulated for adoption by members.
