Mala Mahanadu leaders arrested
Updated: 07-23-2007

HYDERABAD: Over 200 members and leaders of Mala Mahanadu, headed by
Karem Sivaji, were arrested on Monday when they organised a 'Chalo
Hyderabad' demanding scrapping of the move to categorise Scheduled
Castes.

Mr. Sivaji and a few other leaders addressed a gathering
numbering a few hundreds, a majority of whom were bare-chested. They
were protesting against the actions of the Government that displayed
'favouritism to Madigas'.
After two hours of protest and slogan-shouting, they got
out of the dharna camp on to the road opposite Indira Park. The strong
contingent of police personnel waiting there physically bundled the
agitators into police vans and drove them to different police
stations.
Mr. Sivaji asked the Government to give up all
categorisation moves aimed at helping the Madiga community, scrap the
Usha Mehra Commission, include the Madigas in Backward Classes list
and fill backlog posts in various Government departments by August 15.
