Ambedkar Jayanti celebrations: Rally turns stormy, 14 booked TNN, Apr 14, 2010, 10.47pm IST RAJKOT: A massive rally taken out by followers of Dr B R Ambedkar here on the occasion of his birth anniversary on Wednesday turned awry when some anti-social elements allegedly started pelting stones at police officials who were on bandobast duty. Fourteen persons were booked for rioting, of which 12 were arrested by evening. According to police, the participants of the rally were walking peacefully till they reached the civil hospital cross-roads where a statue of Dr Ambedkar has been instituted. At that point, some persons from the rally allegedly started pelting stones at police. They also alleged that the miscreants tried to vandalise property on the streets. "There was a tussle between some of the persons in the rally. When the policemen on duty tried to intervene, they, in turn, started hitting the police and pelting stones. Soon, about 14 persons got together and turned the situation stormy," a police official said. Police had to resort to using tear gas shells and lathi charge to disperse the mob and bring the situation under control. Police officials arrested at least, 12 including Rami Parmar, 19, the leader of the mob. Police also alleged that some among the mob were drunk. According to A division police station officials, the accused have been booked under various sections of Indian Penal Codes including Section 332, 186 147, 188 among others. Moreover, the hospital cross-roads is major cross section for in-coming and out going traffic in the city, which got disrupted due to the riot-like situation.
