The final cut Media students in the city are all charged up about their projects. express features service Pune, April 11: http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=124665 For most final-year students of media institutes in the city, it's that time of the year again. Nearing the end of a gruelling two-year course learning the tricks of the media trade, they are now testing their skills on their final-year projects and churning out a variety of films and research papers in the process. The projects are serious business for the students who are determined to give it their best shot. There is no hesitation about hiring a professional director to shoot a film or traveling all over the country to conduct extensive research. Like Shanti Bhushan, third-year cinematography student at FTII who convinced a girl to shave of her tresses.Says Bhushan, "Our projects are expected to be authentic. My film is about a youngsadhvi. I was searching for a girl who could play the part and go bald for the film. While visiting various campuses in Pune, we chanced upon Rutuja Deshmukh in Pune University and we convinced her to shave off her hair." Smiles Rutuja, "I liked the script too and I was very inspired about Bhushan's passion for the film so I decided to work for him." Media research students have their own problems with tons of data to sift through. The result of such dedication though results in some innovative research work coming through. Malavika Vettath, student of Media Research, DCS is working on a case study for the South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) on `Media initiatives in confidence building measures'. Having interviewed journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, and former prime minister IK Gujral, her research is now in the final stages. Vishram Dhole, lecturer, DCS, says, "The projects, though not sponsored by the media industry are driven by the industry and reflects a student's ability to work in the industry. The determination they possess is hard to find even among the professionals." "We arrange for everything right from locations to appointments, besides working withing the limited budget", adds Neeraj Bhat, student of Video Production, DCS, who is working on a telefilm about the process of bride hunting in Maharashtra. The projects are also commercially beneficial in certain cases. Amol Khamkar, faculty, Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication, says "We do send the films produced by our students to film festivals. " For some like Snehal Samant, student of Rosary Institute of Mass Communications, semester projects are also a way of creating social awareness. Samant who is capturing a day in the life of a street child' says, "I decided to make this documentary on Ganesh, a street child who sells balloons for a living. We followed him for an entire day to shoot a typical day in his life. I wanted to do something with a social relevance because I feel that as film makers we need to spread a positive social message." ------------------------ Yahoo!
