UNESCO offers online workshop for Asian journalists

Feb 23, 2006

Representing 14 Asian countries, 45 journalists are participating in an online workshop on reporting on the goals and progress of a UN-led education initiative.

The workshop is began February 1 and goes until March 15. UNESCO is organizing the training in partnership with the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU). The idea is to help the journalists better understand the UN-led Education for All campaign, which began in 1990 as a drive to provide primary education for all children and increase adult literacy.

The participating journalists hail from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Hong Kong/China, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

UNESCO says it hopes the course helps the journalists improve their writing and reporting skills, while they also learn about the initiative's goals and the connections between education and development.

Meanwhile, Hara Prasad Padhy of UNESCO told IJNet that a newly revised version of the online training materials, "Education Makes News," would be launched by the end of February.
