Senior scribe Jafri is MIM’s MLC candidate

TNN, Apr 20, 2010, 05.20am IST

HYDERABAD: In a surprise move, the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM)
on Monday filed the nomination of senior journalist Syed Amin-ul-Hasan
Jafri for elections to one of the three seats to the Legislative
Council for which elections are to be held on May 7. This is for the
first time that the MIM in its 60 years of history is sending a
mediaperson to the legislature.

"It is not just politicians who serve society. There are intellectuals
in different fields who have been contributing for the welfare of the
people. We wanted to acknowledge this fact by fielding Jafri for the
Council seat," MIM president and Hyderabad Parliament member Asaduddin
Owaisi said after announcing Jafri’s candidature from Hyderabad local
body constituency.

Jafri, who had taken leave from journalism to work for an advertising
firm for the past two years, said that the MIM offer came as a
surprise to him. "I spoke with my family before saying yes to the
offer. As a journalist, I have spent most of my life with politicians
but never thought that I would enter the legislature. This is a good
opportunity to serve the people through a different medium," he told
TOI. Of the three Council seats for which elections are being held,
two fall in the GHMC area for which the Congress has nominated M S
Prabhakar and MIM Jafri.

The third seat, which falls under the Ranga Reddy local bodies, is
likely to witness a contest between TDP candidate and Congress nominee
Kasani Gyaneswar.

If elected, Jafri, 55, will be the second MIM member in the
Legislative Council besides Altaf Haider Rizvi. The party has seven
members in the Legislative Assembly and one member of Lok Sabha.
