Thanks Devika, that is also one of my favourites for several reasons.
 
I have been quiet lately due to carpentry and painting occasioned by the fact that next-door's termites have been using me as a fast-food joint. This has led to a poem (?) in the style of Ogden Nash...more of an outburst, really. A performance poem.
 

FEEDING TERMITES        

 

I should have heard the clatter of tiny knives and forks,

The chatter of feasting termites in my walls,

Seen the fine dust falling, the pictures consumed,

The daylight-excluding tunnels across the floor.

But I was away: in my absence, they made merry,

Could they have got at it, I swear, my liquor

Would have made their dinners more convivial.

 

What was worse was that they did not stay :

Like Irish beggars, they came, they munched,

And ran away. They lived with my neighbour,

And raided through the cracks in the wall

(Relics of an earthquake), retreating

With tummies full, clutching yet more booty.

I returned, and found devastation.

I moved edible pictures and books, hung plates,

Put glass shelves and brass instead. 

But I know they lie in wait.  Somewhere in the ceiling

Are hungry cohorts.

 

Tomorrow men will come

With deadly spray and lethal injection: this is death row,

This is my private Holocaust: bloated wrigglers

Will fall out of the cracks, and die - and I,

With vindictive glee, will consign their lifeless bodies

To the trash-bin, without a prayer.
