Indian poetry in English is plagued by the kind of irrationality suggested in
these word of Jelaluddin Balkhi 'Rumi'. There are just too many Indians writing
poetry in English, and too few reading it. Nobody publishes poetry books and
the occasional anthologies that do come out do not do justice to the vast
amount of poetry being written in English all over the country.
ZESTPoets is an email-based poetry discussion group focusing on India and the
Indian subcontinent. It is a platform for those interested in reading or
writing verse in the English language.
ZESTPoets is a rich community discussion forum where you can share your work
and get feedback from peers, as well as read poems by influential and
innovative poets beginning from Arun Kolatkar, Dom Moraes, Kamala Das and
Vikram Seth to more contemporary voices.
Active debates, analyses of poetry, dissent, constructive discussions,
clarifications and substantive arguments are encouraged.
The group was in the coming for a long time, and we fixed 3 June 2004 to be the
day the first message would be circulated. Ironically, Dom Moraes passed away
on 2 June.

The group has no fixed policies as such: it is the group's members who shape
its character. It is, therefore, important that we all be familiar with each
other. This is why all group members are requested to send a brief mail to
[email protected] telling us about themselves in about 50 words, and
about the poetry they read and write in another 50 words. You can, of course,
express yourself in verse.

and we'll immediately allow you in.
* Please send such an introductory email even if you are, and plan to continue
to be, a lurker on the list.
* All 'bios' are put in the database section of the group, which you can access
only if you are a member of the group and have a Yahoo! ID. It is at

* All bios are also put together in the form of an autmatic monthly email and
sent to all group members.
* If you have posted your bio and do not find it in the database, please inform

ZEST uses the simple format of a Yahoo! Groups mailing list to bring ideas that
are important to you, but are lost in everyday mainstream media. We run seven
other ZEST lists, and all of these are together managed by a team of ten
moderators, most of whom have never met each other.
