Well (sorry, I can't resist!), if one drops a pebble in the well, or pours love into a heart, one will hear something. If one can't hear it, one ought to get a check-up.  It's all in the metaphor, the note audible to a poet and those with poetry in their hearts. Others are deaf to it.
 
Physically, a well is a cylinder containing water.  The sound emanating from it depends on the depth of the water and the intensity is inversely proportional to the bone density of the auditor's skull as well as acuity of reception like the quality of a radio.  Some pick up more static than others.

Can I say there is a well by listening? I dont think the well makes any sounds. Well's a quiet place, a pond would have made more sense. But pond doesnt rhyme.. so maybe the well should stay. Or maybe the frogs in the well do make sounds, at night especially. Freudian frogs, which hide during the day. Ha ha.
