I set out on a long walk
One night, don’t know why…
I thought I could reach the places
For which others wouldn’t even try.

I kept walking relying upon
My sole confidence,
Battling the midnight darkness;
No moon peeped out of the sky.

The air was thick with mist,
I thought my tears hung frozen there.
I hugged myself for some warmth
To melt the biting frost within.

In silence I walked past empty roads,
Only a dog or two laid there.
I stumbled upon a rock, its noise
Invited an unpleasant stare.

Even dogs didn’t like to get disturbed,
For peace they were willing to fight.
And here was I, disturbed and desolate,
Not knowing wrong from right;

Venturing into dark lanes, where dim

Street lights formed shadowy lines;
Watching the night creep eerily about,
Watching my lone self lose sight;

Until a towering wall had arrested
My progress by the bend,
And there was no prospect of further
Movement; I had reached the Dead End…

Vidyanjali.
