Seems my year-old thread vanished from the forum archives, but it can still be
found in other replicas:

http://www.archivum.info/opensolaris-bugs at
opensolaris.org/2009-02/00058/[osol-bugs]-Bug-with-long-filenames-in-kernel-CIFS-server-and-or-ZFS.html

Tim Haley wrote that he opened a new BugID to track the issue:
6802759 solaris (or at least ZFS) should better support long multi-byte file
names

and that the root of the problem concerned "MAXNAMELEN (sys/param.h) is 256
bytes across the Solaris kernel".

That bug was last updated in November 2009, and stands as accepted and unfixes.
With Oracle acq and other stuff going on, was there any progress? Will there be?

Another aspect of the problem, touched in the original post but untracked as a
BugID, was that the CIFS server aborted directory listings when it encountered
invalid (due to mid-character byte trunkation) UTF-8 names.

Thanks for any info,
//Jim Klimov
