A question with regards to the possibilities with ZFS. There are some proprietary SAN solutions on the market that have the capability to automatically move data that is not accessed frequently moved down to lower-tier of storage.
This is very convenient in maximizing the value of high-RPM disk and move seldom accessed data to slower-RPM disks.
