SAS controllers do support SATA drives actually (not the other way around though). I'm running SATA drives on mine without a problem. As far as which ones are supported by Solaris someone else will have to answer as I actually use ZFS on FreeBSD. SATA controllers are usually less expensive than SAS controllers of course.
