For the purpose of illustration, the case showing the huge sawtooth was when running three processes at once. The period/duration of the sawtooth was pretty similar, but the magnitude changes.

I agree that there is a size which provides the best balance of smoothness and application performance. Probably the value should be dialed down to just below the point where the sawtooth occurs.
