Well, I think Sara's oversimplified things a bit, probably
indulged a few too many caricatures.

I doubt many come to Boston to get free health care. Also, our
taxes do pay to bring kids out of the inner city to schools in
the wealthier suburbs. About 4-5 percent of the kids in the
public schools of my little town come from the inner city. And,
the per capita spending on inner city schools (about $10,500 a
year per kid) ranks alongside per capita spending in wealthier
towns like Dover and Weston with the state's best public school
systems. The tax cuts proposed by Mitt Romney are threatening
the very successful METCO program (Some would say -- I'm NOT
among them -- promoting such tax cuts is easy for Mitt, seeings
how all his kids went to private schools).

There are also "public housing projects" in every major American
city, even ones in the Midwest. While I too believe that people
should become self-sufficient, I'm not willing to endorse a
policy that would cause the unwilling and their children to go
hungry or without basic medical care. Different strokes for
different folks.
