I was just wondering what the right attitude towards
anti-depressants should be in light of the passages from the
Writings which say that hardships/suffering are a good thing. By
taking anti-depressants when depressed one is obviously making
things easier for themself. If one doesn't take anti-depressants
they would have more hardship, which is said to lead to more
character development. So what to do? Let yourself suffer? In the
Writings it says that God never burdens a soul beyond their
capacity. Does this mean with or without medical assistance?
This is a complex topic.
I don't think there is any doubt that mood altering drugs are
over-prescribed. However they have a role to play, especially in
crisis intervention. The problem arises when a doctor finds it
easier (and more profitaable?) to prescribe a pill for extended
periods rather than help the patient deal with the problem that
caused the depression.
At the same time, there are a lot of people who feel they should not
have to put up with occasional 'down' spells. They immediately go to
their doctor and insist on a pill to make them feel 'normal'.
