the kmix issue is a bug that has been fixed in kde-3.2 cvs (ie
kdemultimedia-3.2 will have a fixed kmix when it'll be released)

maybe some acpi issue prevent proper initialization of the sound card
by the bios ?
have you tried to boot with and w/o acpi?
