Re: 3494 and tapes question.
Hi, If you can't expand your library capacity here are some tips for you: 1. Move your archive data offsite if possible.. Archive retention is based on time, not on versions like backups. You can organize the space reclamations better . 2. You don't have to put back a tape as soon as it needs to be reclaimed. Write a scipt that checks the reclaimable space on your offsite volumes, and move them onsite when you have more of them, or on a regular basis. 3. Organize your vault, especially if you have a lot of tapes offsite. At my site we mainly do archiving, so I have separate shelves for different retention time archives. 4. As for restores: either you check manually for required tapes when doing a restore, or you can set up some scripts to query the tsm server. In my case I wrote a small C code to let the TSM server log its messages to the standard Unix syslog service (I can send it for you, runs on AIX). Since we have a separate server for collection and analyzing syslogs, I just put a new rule into the syslog analyzer to send me (or the operators) a mail when a tape request arives from the TSM server (check out Logsurfer. Its free, and quite good.). A simple reply to the mail checkes in the media. (It needs to be put into the library first, of course. :) ) I hope this helps you, but again: you should avoid offsite volumes. It's just a pain in the lib. :) Imre Csatls Solaris TSM Admin Budapest Bank Rt, Hungary -Original Message- From: Farren Minns [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: 2003. janur 15. 17:47 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: 3494 and tapes question. Hi TSMers I am looking at what to do in the next year or so when our tape library becomes full. Baring in mind that we don't do much in the way of restores (most backups are for DR), is it feasible to remove tapes from the library and just keep them on site in case they are requested for a restore, reclamation etc. Does anyone out there do this kind of thing and how does it work for you? Re: To Collate or Not to Collate? - UPDATE
We only back up 26 servers (NT, OS/2, Solaris, Linux, Mac) with one 3494 library and two 3590 drives. If we had collocation on our Copypool, it would mean sending 26 tapes off-site every morning, even if most of them had under a gig of data on them. All these tapes would then need to be reclaimed (we set the reclamation threshold to 60%) keeping our two poor tape drives permamnently busy. And, as we have a five day retention on our pending volumes, this means a potential 100 odd tapes floating about that we could be using. We do collocate our Tapepool though to speed up restore times. Also, we don't have the five day pending problem with the on-site tapes. However, regarding the collocation=no issue on copypools Having done TSM DR recoveries at an offsite location a few times, let me share my experiences. When I started with TSM I had one copypool with colloc=no. We then did our first DR recovery test where my goal was to recover the TSM server and ONE other AIX client. The base os (AIX) was to restored via sysback, user filesystems via TSM. Originally this required the ENTIRE copypool (800+ tapes back then) to be sent from the vault to the DR location as TSM provides no command to see which vols would be needed for a client node restore (hint, hint, IBM). Since then I've been able to put an SQL query together to get that info but it takes quite a while to execute. This trims down the number of tapes, but the number of tapes was still quite large(100 +). Furthermore, the number of tape mount requests during the restore was astronomical, as tapes were requested multiple times. After re-thinking TSM and DR needs, I now have a separated stgpool tree for unix data. Collocation is enabled for both primary and copypools. At the last DR test, the number of tapes needed from the vault was further reduced to around 40, and the restore process took significantly less time. Let's not forget to factor in the time required for physical tape processing (mount delay, seek time, rewind, unload). This can add up to significant wall time. Regards, Al
Re: AW: 5.1.6 Fix
do they have QA methodology since 4.2.2.0 ? It sure doesn't make Tivoli look good to have major defects in just about every new level made available to customers. To put a software level onto the FTP site and then have to withdraw it is more than embarassing. I recall the VM product being in similar straits in the mid-80s, with entrenched habits and procedures and attitudes creating perpetually troublesome software. Finally, IBM put a new product manager in place who had vision and initiative: he completely turned things around. That's what TSM needs. They still haven't learned that same old is no good. I would so strongly recommend that you do not remove onsite storage volumes from you library if you can help it at all. Yes it will work, but when you need to do restores, or reclaimation management becomes a full time job. When we out grew our system I had a similar situation, I ended up having to write a perl script to query the server every 5 minutes and email outstanding requests to my OPS team. Although there are ways to find out what tape one might hold a nodes data while preparing for a restore, there is no easy way to know which tape has the active data. This makes tape shuffling very probable. Simply put, if there is a way to keep it all in the robot, do so! WINNT 4.0 SP5 PDC wasn't backing up the software hive in the registry
Good morning, all, I am trying to figure this one out, and I need help (it was a long night). Last night one of our PDC bit the dust, and I was attempting to rebuild the client on identical hardware (and dissimilar hardware, too). It didn't work (it's always worked before). What I determined to be the problem was that there were NO software registry hives backed up for that client at all. The rest of them were there, and it was like it should be (1 active and 4 inactive versions). I have an AIX 4.3.3 ML10 with 4.2.1.9 server code and the client code was at 4.2.1.20. The PDC's last successful backup was on 1/10 and stopped backing up 1/11, due to ANS4036E An error occurred saving the registry key. ANS1512E Scheduled event 'NT_2230' failed. Return code = 4. It did this 1/11 thru yesterday, when our OPS staff notified me that there was a problem. After it would return the error code, it would set up for the next night's backup. Unfortunately, there were major network problems over the weekend, and they were told they didn't need to weed out the real errors/failures from the ones that were caused by connectivity, so this didn't get caught until yesterday.) When I got on to the server, there were messages about the password in the registry (which I thought was the problem with the registry), so I did a dsmcutil updatepw, and stopped and restarted the scheduler. I tried to force a back up, and then got this error msg: 01/15/2003 12:47:21PM ANS4023E Error processing '\\d5n01\c$': file input/output error And I asked if the server could be rebooted- and it never came back up. Why was the reg key gone? There should have been *at least* inactive copies, if the registry error registered with TSM as a deletion (3 vers if deleted). Any body have any ideas what when wrong? I know I don't, and I need to be able to explain my failure restoring the PDC with TSM (I have done bare metals before, but my boss doesn't particularly care for me, and this failure is a real opportunity for him-- no body cares about the backups, they just care about the restores-- and when it works it is unremarkable, but when it doesn't it's almost catastrophic). any help would be appreciated!! -lisa
Re: recovery log filling up rapidly: Please help: EMERGENCY!!!! !
I've seen the log fill in Normal if you have a client running that's not sending commits often enough. Clients with NICs set to Autonegotiate, then ending up at 100/Half Duplex (or 10/Half duplex, a couple of times) will pin the log due to not getting to a commit point. Add in expiration on an active TSM server, and your log can fill up fast. Also, I believe the log doesn't commit during a database backup operation, so if that takes an extended period of time (wait for mount point, then large database to send), you can get the log pretty full. Nick Cassimatis Today is the tomorrow of yesterday.

One possibility, which I have seen at clients, is that the database is on very slow disk. Orville L. Lantto Datatrend Technologies, Inc. tsm database unload question
Hey Fellow TSMer's, We were attempting to perform a database unload of a 55 gig TSM database yesterday. During the unload the output on the screen said: number database entries unloaded. How do you find out how many database entries a database has in total. Unfortunately the TSM database unload operation does not provide you with much as far as number of number progress output or an animated bar or something. If there's a formula we could use to find out how many entries there are or ballpark that would be great. This way when we try this again we can pin out a better time line. Also after 7 hours and 400 million dumped database entries later the unload operating just paused Any ideas?. Re: Problems with TSM AIX server V5.1.5.4
I think these values may be too high but you should let AIX support make this decision. I believe you should open a pmr with IBM AIX support for this. In the past, when customers have reported these errors, various things have had to be done in order to change these values. First of all, it will require TSM to be temporarily brought down. I would try the following sequence if you wish to proceed - but I would call AIX support first. 1.See if you can change the values after you unmount the filesystem. If not, proceed to step 2. 2.Do a varyoffvg command for the volume group containing the volume. 3. You now should be able to change the queue depth and max_coalsece values. 4. Do a varyonvg for the volume group. 5. do a mount -a to remount the filesystems. 6. Retry the dsmfmt command. TSM 5.1 resource requirements
We have a 4.2.3.0 TSM server running under OS/390. We are having severe difficulties achieving acceptable performance with the amount of memory available on the system, and occasional difficulties with CPU capacity. We will have to migrate to 5.1 within a few months to maintain vendor support. How do 5.1 memory and processor requirements compare to those of 4.2?
Can TSM Server V4.2.3.0 run on AIX 5.2?

In light of this, what would be the best way to protect a node's data from expiring at all?? To keep from both active and inactive versions expiring?? If we rename the node and filespace, would the time based retention rules eventually get the data?? Or since the new (renamed) node name never has a backup, we are ok. Perhaps moving the node to a policy domain with unlimited retention is the only way to protect both active and inactive files?? Need some help on sequence of checkin libv ... search commands
I'm having a senior moment here while trying to revise my TSM server recovery D/R documentation (we just sprung for a REAL library in the D/R contract!). Two questions: 1)After I do the 'audit library libname checklabel=barcode' I need to do two checkins; I seem to recall that the order is critical, and that I need to do checkin libv libname search=yes checklabel=barcode status=scratch first and then the checkin libv libname search=yes checklabel=barcode status=private or I end up with no scratch tapes. But this is memory from back in the ADSM 3.1 days . . . 2) When I do the database restore (dsmserv restore db dev=lto vol=volser commit=yes) with a library, do I get a prompt to insert the tape in the I/O station and reply, or do I get told to insert the tape in drive x within y minutes? Re: Need some help on sequence of checkin libv ... search comma nds
Tom, you are correct. This is the way we do the checkin commands when DR tapes return because we do a lot of move data commands. What will happen is tapes that have no data on them will end up being marked private in the libvolumes table. However, it is easy to fix. All you have to do is an update libv [library] [volume] status=scratch. TSM will not mark a tape scratch for reuse unless it has no data on it. I have the following select that I call my SCRATCH FINDER that will show you all the volumes that had the private command issued first or have bad labels and TSM placed the volumes in private status so it would not try to use them anymore. select volume_name from libvolumes where status='Private' and libvolumes.volume_name not in (select volume_name from volumes) and libvolumes.volume_name not in (select volume_name from volhistory where type in ('BACKUPFULL', 'BACKUPINCR', 'DBSNAPSHOT', 'EXPORT')) Paul D. Re: Quick expiration question
Files that do not have an active version do not get rebound if you set them to a new policy domain management class. In fact, we have had to create dummy files and run a backup with a special management class to get this kind of data to rebind. I really want a command that I can say rebind to a management class anything with a specific mask and date and lock the rebound entries from a client rebind so that specific backup objects can be managed when business exceptions come up after the fact. The traditional full/incremental backup, you would just change the retention of the tapes. With what I am suggesting you get exactly what you want, only the items changed and controlled under adminstrator management. Level of authority would be Policy Domain. Paul D. Re: TSM database question
Presuming the disk are SSA disk. UNLOAD/LOAD is not CPU intensive based on what I have seen from others, I think you can expect 6 hours to unload and 4 to 5 to load it back. You can cancel the unload without having to restore your database from backup a backup. But, you are committed to the load once you start it or a database restore. So, you do want to do at least a DBSnapshot then backup devconfig and backup volhistory before taking down your system to do the unload/load so you can recover if the unload tape has a problem during the load. 4.1.2 is a really old level of TSM, no support, you are on your own except what folks can do for you from the list. Re: Need some help on sequence of checkin libv ... search commands
Hi Tom, 1) You must checkin the scratch tapes before the private, since performing a private checkin first will cause all of your scratch tapes to have a private status. Therefore do a scratch checkin for your scratch tapes first, then a private checkin for your tapes containing data. 2)Normally if the volume is mounted in a barcode library you are not prompted, but if the volume is not in the library's inventory you will receive a prompt requesting the volume mount. I do believe that you are asked to use the I/O slot. Re: WINNT 4.0 SP5 PDC wasn't backing up the software hive in the registry
Sounds like it may have been a hardware (disk) drive failure where the registry is found. Maybe the registry hive was not available. This would also explain why it wouldn't reboot. Does the PDC even get to the 'last good menu' option? If so, try it. Can you restore from the 1/10 backups? Other things to consider: Are the disk drives mirrored? If yes, maybe you could try booting from the other drive by updating boot.ini Do you have a BDC? Promote it to PDC and recreate this server from scratch as a BDC and restore from TSM. -lisa
Re: Performance Tuning - Where to begin?

I can provide instructions if you need them. 5. Filessytem for the DB, LOG, and storagepools. RAW, UFS??? Are you using Veritas Volume Manager? 6. The main reason is that I'm sure our backups are running quite slowly. I'm thinking that TCPWindowsize may be worth looking at, and BUFPool size? Our DB cache hit rate is rarely over 97%. We only have 1GB ram, so what is an acceptable value to set for the BUFPollsize. I have set SELFTunebufpoolsize. Also, what sort of impact does a 97% cache hit pct have on backups? Hi This is perhaps more of a communication question rather than a storage management question, but I will still ask, considering some of you out there should have encountered this problem. One of our customers have a P-Series 610 running AIX ML 4.3.3.09. It's equipped with 2 100Mbs Ethernet adapters and one GB adapter. Previously, they all were located on the same subnet. Now, we've move the GB adapter into a separate subnet. The configuraiton looks like this: 1st 100Mbs Ethernet = 192.168.1.1/24 default gateway 192.168.1.254 2nd 100Mbs Ethernet = 192.168.1.2/24 1st Gigabit Ethernet = 192.168.5.1/24 This has become a problem. Everytime a client connects to the TSM server, it responds from the adapter which have the default gateway set. The customer is running spanning tree, which means that it wont allow the TSM server to receive data on one adapter, and respond from another. However, I haven't found a way to have the TSM server respond from the same adapter on which the client connected. In my opinion, this can only be solved in to ways; either having a default gateway for each adapter, or, setting some kind of option, telling the TSM server to awalys respond on the same adapter on which it received the data. BUT, the first alternative doesnt work. AIX 4.3.3.09, in contrary to 5L, wont let me set multiple default gateways, specifying one for each adapter. In AIX 5L, I have the option, when setting static routes, of binding the static route to a specific adapter. When trying to add a second default gateway on AIX 4.3.3.09, it only tells me that there is already a default gateway. The second alternative, however, seems theoretically impossible. The AIX server shouldnt be able to respond to a client, connection from a different subnet, from the adapter on which it received the initial client session. This is because the adapter dont have a default gateway, and therefore shouldn't be able to find it's way to the client, located on a different subnet. This problem still existed when we had all adapters running on the same IP subnet. The GB adapter could recieve data initiated from the clients, but the respones always went through the first 100Mbs ethernet adapter, which had the default gateway. Is there anybody out there running an AIX server with multiple adapters, which have multiple subnets, and has been able to have the AIX respond to the client on the same adapter on which the client initially started the IP session? Perhaps I'm not a communication expert, but to me, this seems like a fairly simple problem.
