Problem with Novell 4.2.3.0 Client

2003-01-16 Thread Stumpf, Joachim
Hello out there,

we upgraded our Novell-Clients with version 4.2.3.0 and now we have problems with the
backups.

cut from the errorlog:
...
01/15/2003 20:32:33 (TSA500.NLM 5.5 315) The program's attempt to scan failed,
probably because an invalid path was specified.
01/15/2003 20:32:33 PrivIncrFileSpace: Received rc=1 from fioGetDirEntries: PVCS:
/DVS/6.6/DVS_VdConv/VdConv14
01/15/2003 20:32:35 ANS1301E Server detected system error

01/15/2003 20:32:35 ANS1512E Scheduled event '20_00_INCR' failed. Return code = 4.

I dont know why this occours here? PVCS:/DVS/6.6/DVS_VdConv/VdConv14 is a valid
directory to backup.
No special signs like german umlauts or others...

Anyone here has seen this before?
btw: Server is a TSM 4.1.6.0 on z/OS 1.2

Re: 3494 and tapes question.

2003-01-16 Thread Imre Csatlos
Hi,
If you can't expand your library capacity here are some tips for you:

1. Move your archive data offsite if possible.. Archive retention is
based on time, not on versions like backups. You can organize the space
reclamations better .
2. You don't have to put back a tape as soon as it needs to be reclaimed.
Write a scipt that checks the reclaimable space on your offsite volumes, and
move them onsite when you have more of them, or on a regular basis.
3. Organize your vault, especially if you have a lot of tapes offsite. At my
site we mainly do archiving,
so I have separate shelves for different retention time archives.

4. As for restores: either you check manually for required tapes when doing
a restore, or you can set up some scripts to query the tsm server. In my
case I wrote a small C code to let the TSM server log its messages to the
standard Unix syslog service (I can send it for you, runs on AIX). Since we
have a separate server for collection and analyzing syslogs, I just put a
new rule into the syslog analyzer to send me (or the operators) a mail when
a tape request arives from the TSM server (check out Logsurfer. Its free,
and quite good.). A simple reply to the mail checkes in the media. (It needs
to be put into the library first, of course. :) )

I hope this helps you, but again: you should avoid offsite volumes. It's
just a pain in the lib. :)

Hi TSMers

I am looking at what to do in the next year or so when our tape library
becomes full. Baring in mind that we don't do much in the way of restores
(most backups are for DR), is it feasible to remove tapes from the library
and just keep them on site in case they are requested for a restore,
reclamation etc. Does anyone out there do this kind of thing and how does
it work for you?

Thanks all

Quick expiration question

2003-01-16 Thread Farren Minns
Hi TSMers

Just a quickie. When an inremental backup runs, some files get expired.
Does this mean that they are 'marked' for expiration, but only get deleted
from the database when the Expire Inventory job is run?

Thanks

My customer here encountered that. The only time we have seen it core

Again, IBM/Tivoli aren't following the strictest QA methodology in
verifying stability of this product.

TSM wouldn't see the tapes. A databse search for volumes on the Library
Manager showed the tapes.

So in manual mode, once a tape is requested, mounted, dismounted... IF it
is required again, the drive will show the tapes original location with a
? to let you know it might be ~on top of a frame somewhere~ (that's where
 I pile them anyway).
Now I always got into arguments with CE's because when we would go back to
auto mode, I'd always put the tapes back into their expected cells BUT the
CE would say I had to check them in through the I/O station. For a while
the library microcode would look at these inserted tapes as ~duplicate
volsers~ and hose me up because when the library needed the volume it would
go look in the initial location, wouldn't find the tape, report it as lost,
and require a full re-inventory BUT that was all some 4-5 years ago. I
believe anymore with the library microcode available about 2 years ago (last
time we upgraded any) it doesn't matter if you put them back yourself prior
to going auto again OR just going auto and sticking them in the I/O station.
Might have your CE check the code level on your internal PC and upgrade...

Hmm, we upgraded the PC microcode about 8 months ago.

Did you happen to catch what category was reported for those volumes
 (manually mounted) ?

Nope, but a 'mtlib -l/dev/lmcp0 -qI|grep XX' showed this:
D00172 012C 02 10 01 (As far as i remember).

Re: To Collate or Not to Collate? - UPDATE

2003-01-16 Thread Farren Minns
We only back up 26 servers (NT, OS/2, Solaris, Linux, Mac) with one 3494
library and two 3590 drives. If we had collocation on our Copypool, it
would mean sending 26 tapes off-site every morning, even if most of them
had under a gig of data on them. All these tapes would then need to be
reclaimed (we set the reclamation threshold to 60%) keeping our two poor
tape drives permamnently busy. And, as we have a five day retention on our
pending volumes, this means a potential 100 odd tapes floating about that
we could be using.

We do collocate our Tapepool though to speed up restore times. Also, we
don't have the five day pending problem with the on-site tapes.

Allen makes a critical implied statement of YOU MUST TEST YOUR RECOVERY
PLAN
!
If not and you have to use it and it doesn't go smooth...
Personally, I classify myself as probably being at the lowest place on the
earth... and even if something were to initially miss me, it would
undoubtedly/eventually settle on top of me! ! !
So... you request the test and state its requirement as to ensure
functionality.
If management says no, make sure and put together a few things on what
~might~ go wrong like potentially 36 hours of nothing but tape mounts
dismounts to restore just a single server (if like in Allen's case where
800
tapes were required)
Then make sure and save all the e-mails (print out and lock in a fireproof
safe) so you can mount a defense later ;-)

Glad you found it!

However, regarding the collocation=no issue on copypools

Having done TSM DR recoveries at an offsite location a few times, let me
share my experiences.   When I started with TSM I had one copypool with
colloc=no.  We then did our first DR recovery test where my goal was to
recover the TSM server and ONE other AIX client.  The base os (AIX) was to
restored via sysback, user filesystems via TSM.   Originally this required
the ENTIRE copypool (800+ tapes back then) to be sent from the vault to
the DR location as TSM provides no command to see which vols would be
needed for a client node restore (hint, hint, IBM).   Since then I've been
able to put an SQL query together to get that info but it takes quite a
while to execute.  This trims down the number of tapes, but the number of
tapes was still quite large(100 +).  Furthermore, the number of tape mount
requests during the restore was astronomical, as tapes were requested
multiple times.  After re-thinking TSM and DR needs, I now have a
separated stgpool tree for unix data.   Collocation is enabled for both
primary and copypools.  At the last DR test, the number of tapes needed
from the vault was further reduced to around 40, and the restore process
took significantly less time.   Let's not forget to factor in the time
required for physical tape processing (mount delay, seek time, rewind,
unload).   This can add up to significant wall time.

Regards,
Al

It sure doesn't make Tivoli look good to have major defects in

is more than embarassing.

I recall the VM product being in similar straits in the mid-80s,
with entrenched habits and procedures and attitudes creating
perpetually troublesome software. Finally, IBM put a new product

turned things around. That's what TSM needs. They still haven't

TDP SQL server 2000 cluster

2003-01-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,

My environment is:

TSM server 5.1.1.6
TSM BA client 5.1.1
TDP SQL 2.2

all running on Windows2000.

I've got to backup a SQL server 2000 running in a microsoft cluster.

I've installed the TDP on both physical nodes of the cluster (S300SQLN1 and
S300SQLN2). The virtual servers are S300SQL02 (runs default on S300SQLN1) and
S300SQL03 (runs default on S300SQLN2).

On the physical node S300SQLN1, the dsm.opt of the TDP for SQL contains:

NODename s300sql02
CLUSTERnode yes
COMPRESSIon Off
PASSWORDAccessGenerate

and the tdpsql.cfg configuration file contains:

SQLAUTHentication INTegrated
SQLBUFFers 0
SQLBUFFERSIze 1024
SQLSERVer S300SQL02

When I launch the TDP gui with the command:

C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\TDPSql\tdpsql /sqlserver=s300sql02

the GUI opens, but when I try to expand the SQL server tree to select the databases, I
get the message:

'ACO5424E Could not connect to SQL server; SQL server returned: '

Also when I select in utilities, 'show MS SQL server information' I get

SQL Server name: Error
Version: 0.0

When I try to launch a full backup from the command line:

I find the following error in sqlsched.log:

ACO5424E Could not connect to SQL server; SQL server returned:

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here, it is obvious that there is an authentification
problem.

The problem ist the Pathlight bridge support online 2K blocks (for optical
device)
The tsm device driver send dynamic blocks with 4K size.

We have done a backup an no error are reported.
When we do a audit vol on the media many errors are reported in the
actlivitylog

A trace from the devicedrive says. Hey i have send 4K and have a rest from the
block but the returncode is null
No error was reportet We can't restore the files.

Now we have a firmwareupdate from Pathlight for 4K support and a new
devicedriver.
Now everything is right.

When anybody have a similar configuration. Check your worm/data !!

Hi

I haven't seen your script, but are you sure this is not an off-site
copypool volume, that the DRM process wants back to the library to convert
it to a scratch volume?

The volume has problably been reclaimed, and therefore, the script, that
probably runs somekind of DMR procedure, wants you to return the empty
tape to the library.

I would so strongly recommend that you do not remove onsite storage
volumes from you library if you can help it at all. Yes it will work,
but when you need to do restores, or reclaimation management becomes a
full time job. When we out grew our system I had a similar situation, I
ended up having to write a perl script to query the server every 5
minutes and email outstanding requests to my OPS team. Although there
are ways to find out what tape one might hold a nodes data while
preparing for a restore, there is no easy way to know which tape has the
active data. This makes tape shuffling very probable. Simply put, if
there is a way to keep it all in the robot, do so!

I am looking at what to do in the next year or so when our tape library
becomes full. Baring in mind that we don't do much in the way of
restores
(most backups are for DR), is it feasible to remove tapes from the
library
and just keep them on site in case they are requested for a restore,
reclamation etc. Does anyone out there do this kind of thing and how
does
it work for you?

These values are actually higher than you suggested.

1. queue depth is set to 48 versus computed value of 45.
2. max_coalesce is set to x1 versus computed xF

Does it matter that the values are higher ?

Also, when we tried to lower them, we did get the drive is busy message
so I am open to your suggestions !!!

Can you do the following and re-post with what you have set for the
following?

smitty devices - SSA disks - SSA Logical Disks - Change/Show
Characteristics of an SSA Logical Disk - select hdiskxx (where xx is the
hdisk where you are defining the volume)

Look at the following fields:

 1. queue depth. This should be set to (# of disks in
array-1)*3

 2. max_coalesce This should be set to (# of disks in array
-1)*65536, converted to hex.

You may have trouble setting these devices - they may report device is
busy if you try and change them. If so, re-post and I'll suggest ways to
get around this. We had one customer report numerous errors like this and
after changing these values, the errors went away.

WINNT 4.0 SP5 PDC wasn't backing up the software hive in the registry

2003-01-16 Thread Lisa Cabanas
Good morning, all,

I am trying to figure this one out, and I need help (it was a long night).
Last night one of our PDC bit the dust, and I was attempting to rebuild the
client on identical hardware (and dissimilar hardware, too).

It didn't work (it's always worked before). What I determined to be the
problem was that there were NO software registry hives backed up for that
client at all. The rest of them were there, and it was like it should be
(1 active and 4 inactive versions). I have an AIX 4.3.3 ML10 with 4.2.1.9
server code and the client code was at 4.2.1.20.

The PDC's last successful backup was on 1/10 and stopped backing up 1/11,
due to

ANS4036E An error occurred saving the registry key.

ANS1512E Scheduled event 'NT_2230' failed. Return code = 4.

It did this 1/11 thru yesterday, when our OPS staff notified me that there
was a problem. After it would return the error code, it would set up for
the next night's backup. Unfortunately, there were major network problems
over the weekend, and they were told they didn't need to weed out the
real errors/failures from the ones that were caused by connectivity, so
this didn't get caught until yesterday.) When I got on to the server, there
were messages about the password in the registry (which I thought was the
problem with the registry), so I did a dsmcutil updatepw, and stopped and
restarted the scheduler.

I tried to force a back up, and then got this error msg:

01/15/2003 12:47:21PM ANS4023E Error processing '\\d5n01\c$': file
input/output error

And I asked if the server could be rebooted- and it never came back up.

Why was the reg key gone? There should have been *at least* inactive
copies, if the registry error registered with TSM as a deletion (3 vers
if deleted).

Any body have any ideas what when wrong? I know I don't, and I need to be
able to explain my failure restoring the PDC with TSM (I have done bare
metals before, but my boss doesn't particularly care for me, and this
failure is a real opportunity for him-- no body cares about the backups,
they just care about the restores-- and when it works it is unremarkable,
but when it doesn't it's almost catastrophic).

any help would be appreciated!!

Re: recovery log filling up rapidly: Please help: EMERGENCY!!!! !

2003-01-16 Thread Nicholas Cassimatis
I've seen the log fill in Normal if you have a client running that's not
sending commits often enough. Clients with NICs set to Autonegotiate, then
ending up at 100/Half Duplex (or 10/Half duplex, a couple of times) will
pin the log due to not getting to a commit point. Add in expiration on
an active TSM server, and your log can fill up fast. Also, I believe the
log doesn't commit during a database backup operation, so if that takes an
extended period of time (wait for mount point, then large database to
send), you can get the log pretty full.

Nick Cassimatis

Today is the tomorrow of yesterday.

Hi Joni

Its strange to see recovery log filling up to 5GB level in NORMAL mode (
you mentioned that in ur previous mail).

In NORMALMODE recovery log doesn't keep transactions, it deletes
transaction as soon as it committed to database.Thats why only
Point-in-Retsore ( till the last consistent database backup) possible
with
recovery log in NORMAL mode.

You can't use database backup trigger with recovery log in NORMAL mode.

with TSM 5.x Recovery Log max size is 13GB.

I can't figure out the reason for this behaviour.Let me know if you could
find the reason.

not
running expiration of the inventory yet due to a previous deletion of a

about 95% full before I run another full backup. I usually run a full DB
backup every day at 4:30. What can I do? I can't increase the recovery

because I guess on this version it can only go to 5 GB? What version is
this no longer true for? I really need help and I can't find anyone from
IBM to return my calls. My previous problem with the recovery log is no
longer true. It does now reset back to 0% after a full backup, but I am
running out of space. I do have the log fully extended and with the 5 GB
limit I am stuck. Also, I can't set up a DB backup trigger because I am

It sure doesn't make Tivoli look good to have major defects in just about

I recall the VM product being in similar straits in the mid-80s, with
entrenched habits and procedures and attitudes creating perpetually

had vision and initiative: he completely turned things around. That's what
TSM needs. They still haven't learned that same old is no good.

tsm database unload question

2003-01-16 Thread Justin Bleistein
Hey Fellow TSMer's,

We were attempting to perform a database unload of a 55 gig TSM
database yesterday. During the unload the output on the screen said:
number database entries unloaded. How do you find out how many database
entries a database has in total. Unfortunately the TSM database unload
operation does not provide you with much as far as number of number
progress output or an animated bar or something. If there's a formula we
could use to find out how many entries there are or ballpark that would be
great. This way when we try this again we can pin out a better time line.

Also after 7 hours and 400 million dumped database entries later the
unload operating just paused Any ideas?. Any suggestions would be
appreciated thanks!.

you have installed a Unicode enabled client on this machines and in

TSM can't change filespaces on the fly to unicode so it renames
the non-unicode filespaces to ..._old, creates new unicode filespaces
and does a full backup for this filespaces.
When your retention period has expired you can delete this filespaces.

Re: Problems with TSM AIX server V5.1.5.4

2003-01-16 Thread Dave Canan
I think these values may be too high but you should let AIX
support make this decision. I believe you should open a pmr with IBM AIX
support for this.

In the past, when customers have reported these errors, various things have
had to be done in order to change these values. First of all, it will
require TSM to be temporarily brought down. I would try the following
sequence if you wish to proceed - but I would call AIX support first.

1.See if you can change the values after you unmount the
filesystem. If not, proceed to step 2.
2.Do a varyoffvg command for the volume group containing the volume.
3. You now should be able to change the queue depth and
max_coalsece values.
4. Do a varyonvg for the volume group.
5. do a mount -a to remount the filesystems.
6. Retry the dsmfmt command.

At 09:08 AM 1/16/2003 -0500, you wrote:

AW: tsm database unload question

2003-01-16 Thread Rupp Thomas (Illwerke)
Hi,

yes, that's what our server is doing as well.
It takes about 2 hrs to unload our 10GB database (80% used) to a 3590 drive.
It writes a lot of messages, then suddenly stops with this messages
but still is heavily working on disk.
It takes about 45 minutes without messages before the unloaddb successfuly
ends.

TSM 5.1 resource requirements

2003-01-16 Thread Thomas Denier
We have a 4.2.3.0 TSM server running under OS/390. We are having severe
difficulties achieving acceptable performance with the amount of memory
available on the system, and occasional difficulties with CPU capacity.
We will have to migrate to 5.1 within a few months to maintain vendor
support. How do 5.1 memory and processor requirements compare to those
of 4.2?

Can TSM Server V4.2.3.0 run on AIX 5.2?

Can anyone give me a ballpark cost of IBM's ADSM Server v. 5, for AIX

We also already have ADSM server 3.1, so we would probably get an upgrade

the tape and the second field is the category. I'm confused as to what the
last three fields mean: 00, 10, 01. Any assistance as too what these
fields indicate about a particular volume would be appreciated. Thanks!.

Just a quickie. When an inremental backup runs, some files get expired.
Does this mean that they are 'marked' for expiration, but only get
deleted from the database when the Expire Inventory job is run?

File expiration candidates processing based upon versions (number of same
file) is performed during client Backups (in contrast to time-based
retention rules, which are processed during a later, separate Expiration).

Hi Zoltan,

you have installed a Unicode enabled client on this machines and in
the node definition you will find Auto Filespace Rename = Yes.

TSM can't change filespaces on the fly to unicode so it renames
the non-unicode filespaces to ..._old, creates new unicode filespaces
and does a full backup for this filespaces.
When your retention period has expired you can delete this filespaces.

Need some help on sequence of checkin libv ... search commands

Two questions:

to do checkin libv libname search=yes checklabel=barcode status=scratch
first and then the checkin libv libname search=yes checklabel=barcode

back in the ADSM 3.1 days . . .

2) When I do the database restore (dsmserv restore db dev=lto vol=volser

If you've set retain extra versions to (example) 30 days in your backup

Re: Need some help on sequence of checkin libv ... search comma nds

2003-01-16 Thread Seay, Paul
Tom, you are correct. This is the way we do the checkin commands when DR
tapes return because we do a lot of move data commands. What will happen is
tapes that have no data on them will end up being marked private in the
libvolumes table. However, it is easy to fix. All you have to do is an
update libv [library] [volume] status=scratch. TSM will not mark a tape
scratch for reuse unless it has no data on it. I have the following select
that I call my SCRATCH FINDER that will show you all the volumes that had
the private command issued first or have bad labels and TSM placed the
volumes in private status so it would not try to use them anymore.

select volume_name from libvolumes where status='Private' and
libvolumes.volume_name not in (select volume_name from volumes) and
libvolumes.volume_name not in (select volume_name from volhistory where type
in ('BACKUPFULL', 'BACKUPINCR', 'DBSNAPSHOT', 'EXPORT'))

Files that do not have an active version do not get rebound if you set them
to a new policy domain management class. In fact, we have had to create
dummy files and run a backup with a special management class to get this
kind of data to rebind.

I really want a command that I can say rebind to a management class anything
with a specific mask and date and lock the rebound entries from a client
rebind so that specific backup objects can be managed when business
exceptions come up after the fact. The traditional full/incremental backup,
you would just change the retention of the tapes. With what I am suggesting
you get exactly what you want, only the items changed and controlled under
adminstrator management. Level of authority would be Policy Domain.

Re: TSM database question

2003-01-16 Thread Seay, Paul
Presuming the disk are SSA disk. UNLOAD/LOAD is not CPU intensive based on
what I have seen from others, I think you can expect 6 hours to unload and 4
to 5 to load it back. You can cancel the unload without having to restore
your database from backup a backup. But, you are committed to the load once
you start it or a database restore. So, you do want to do at least a
DBSnapshot then backup devconfig and backup volhistory before taking down
your system to do the unload/load so you can recover if the unload tape has
a problem during the load.

4.1.2 is a really old level of TSM, no support, you are on your own except
what folks can do for you from the list.

Good Luck.

Re: Need some help on sequence of checkin libv ... search commands

2003-01-16 Thread Edwin Hernandez
Hi Tom,

1) You must checkin the scratch tapes before the private, since
performing a private checkin first will cause all of your scratch tapes
to have a private status. Therefore do a scratch checkin for your
scratch tapes first, then a private checkin for your tapes containing
data.

2)Normally if the volume is mounted in a barcode library you are not
prompted, but if the volume is not in the library's inventory you will
receive a prompt requesting the volume mount. I do believe that you are
asked to use the I/O slot.

Good luck,

Edwin

I'm having a senior moment here while trying to revise my TSM server
recovery D/R documentation (we just sprung for a REAL library in the D/R
contract!). (3584 SCSI library)

It's been a l-o-n-g time since I've done this, I need to get the doc
revised
this week, and I won't get to test until April.

Two questions:

1)After I do the 'audit library libname checklabel=barcode' I need to
do
two checkins; I seem to recall that the order is critical, and that I
need
to do checkin libv libname search=yes checklabel=barcode
status=scratch
first and then the checkin libv libname search=yes checklabel=barcode
status=private or I end up with no scratch tapes. But this is memory
from
back in the ADSM 3.1 days . . .

2) When I do the database restore (dsmserv restore db dev=lto
vol=volser
commit=yes) with a library, do I get a prompt to insert the tape in the
I/O
station and reply, or do I get told to insert the tape in drive x within
y
minutes?

Re: WINNT 4.0 SP5 PDC wasn't backing up the software hive in the registry

2003-01-16 Thread Sal Mangiapane
Sounds like it may have been a hardware (disk) drive failure where the registry is
found.

Maybe the registry hive was not available. This would also explain why it wouldn't
reboot.

Does the PDC even get to the 'last good menu' option? If so, try it.

Can you restore from the 1/10 backups?

Other things to consider:

Are the disk drives mirrored? If yes, maybe you could try booting from the other
drive by updating boot.ini

Do you have a BDC? Promote it to PDC and recreate this server from scratch as a BDC
and restore from TSM.

Thanks and God bless,

Subject: WINNT 4.0 SP5 PDC wasn't backing up the software hive in the
 registry

Re: Performance Tuning - Where to begin?

2003-01-16 Thread Dave Canan
I'd like to know the following:

1. DB layout. How many DB volumes? How many storagepool volumes?
2. Is the DB RAIDed? RAID0, 1, 5, etc? Are the Storage pools RAIDed?
3. Are the DB, LOG, and storagepools all separated on separate
physical disks?
4. Would you be willing to run a performance trace for a sample
backup and send it to me? I can provide instructions if you
need them.
5. Filessytem for the DB, LOG, and storagepools. RAW, UFS??? Are
you using Veritas Volume Manager?
6. If you use SELFTUNEBUFPOOLSIZE, your bufpoolsize will never be
more than 10% of real available memory. This
may be too small. Are you seeing paging during your backup window?

At 10:44 AM 1/15/2003 +, you wrote:

Hi all TSMers

I need some dummies guide kind of pointers here. I have downloaded a copy
of the performance tuning guide for TSM server 4.2 and it has lots of great
info.

But where do I start? Here is my basic situation.

TSM Server 4.2.2.12 running on an Sun E250 1GB memory, 400Mhz, Solaris 2.7
50 GB backupool
8.5 GB DB - 80% utilised
1 GB Log

I backup 26 servers, mostly Solaris and NT, but some OS2, one Linux and one
Mac OSX.

I want to know where the best place to start with tuning is. We don't do
much in the way of restores (touch wood), so I want to see about speeding
up backups first. What are the best parameters to look at for this? I know
you are probably going to say, 'Read the Manual', but I always tend to find
other people's real world experience a great starting point. The main
reason is that I'm sure our backups are running quite slowly.

I'm thinking that TCPWindowsize may be worth looking at, and BUFPool size?
Our DB cache hit rate is rarely over 97%. We only have 1GB ram, so what is
an acceptable value to set for the BUFPollsize. I have set
SELFTunebufpoolsize. Also, what sort of impact does a 97% cache hit pct
have on backups?

Ok, so this is a low level question, but you people may help me to ask the
correct questions.

Thanks in advance

Hi All,

Recently I have upgraded TSM server from 4.2.1.9 to 4.2.3.0 on AIX the
upgradation went fine without any problems, After upgradation I observed
many changes in scheduled backup status like In progress, Uncertain,
etc. But later I found that performance of scheduled backup (server prompt)
is decreased now the no. of missed backup have been increased.

Did any one faced same or any other problems after upgrading to 4.2.3.0 and
I will appreciate your valuable suggestions to solve the problem.

2003-01-16 Thread Daniel Sparrman
Hi

This is perhaps more of a communication question rather than a storage
management question, but I will still ask, considering some of you out
there should have encountered this problem.

One of our customers have a P-Series 610 running AIX ML 4.3.3.09. It's
equipped with 2 100Mbs Ethernet adapters and one GB adapter. Previously,
they all were located on the same subnet. Now, we've move the GB adapter
into a separate subnet.

The configuraiton looks like this:

1st 100Mbs Ethernet = 192.168.1.1/24 default gateway 192.168.1.254
2nd 100Mbs Ethernet = 192.168.1.2/24
1st Gigabit Ethernet = 192.168.5.1/24

This has become a problem. Everytime a client connects to the TSM server,
it responds from the adapter which have the default gateway set. The
customer is running spanning tree, which means that it wont allow the TSM
server to receive data on one adapter, and respond from another. However, I
haven't found a way to have the TSM server respond from the same adapter on
which the client connected. In my opinion, this can only be solved in to
ways; either having a default gateway for each adapter, or, setting some
kind of option, telling the TSM server to awalys respond on the same
adapter on which it received the data.

BUT, the first alternative doesnt work. AIX 4.3.3.09, in contrary to 5L,
wont let me set multiple default gateways, specifying one for each adapter.
In AIX 5L, I have the option, when setting static routes, of binding the
static route to a specific adapter. When trying to add a second default
gateway on AIX 4.3.3.09, it only tells me that there is already a default
gateway.

The second alternative, however, seems theoretically impossible. The AIX
server shouldnt be able to respond to a client, connection from a different
subnet, from the adapter on which it received the initial client session.
This is because the adapter dont have a default gateway, and therefore
shouldn't be able to find it's way to the client, located on a different
subnet.

This problem still existed when we had all adapters running on the same IP
subnet. The GB adapter could recieve data initiated from the clients, but
the respones always went through the first 100Mbs ethernet adapter, which
had the default gateway.

Is there anybody out there running an AIX server with multiple adapters,
which have multiple subnets, and has been able to have the AIX respond to
the client on the same adapter on which the client initially started the IP
session?

Perhaps I'm not a communication expert, but to me, this seems like a fairly
simple problem.

Best Regards
