Hello Nancy;

Please check out the National Park Service Conserve O Gram [COG] on identifying
mouse and rat damage in museum collections at 3/12-COG-Rodent-Damage.pdf
(nps.gov)
and COG 3/11: Identifying Museum Insect Pest Damage
(nps.gov).
These two COGs include illustrations of damage that help with identifying the
pests that cause the damage.

You might also take a look at the COG 2/ 8: Hantavirus Disease Health and

provides information on this rare but serious respiratory virus transmitted by
mice and rats.

Hello,

My institution is working on refining our IPM policies and procedures, and I
was wondering if anyone would be willing to share their IPM policies/procedures
with us. The MuseumPests website has been a great starting point, but many of
those are a decade old or more. With how fast and often IPM evolves, I wanted

I would especially be interested in any natural history museum's policies, but

Hi Joan,

We have been using a Liebherr upright freezer (modell GGPv 6570-43) over years
for IPM purpose.
It maintains a constant temperature of -20°C and is made entirely of stainless
steel.

I can't say for sure if it's good enough for storing photos and films, but I
think it is.

Hello Joel,

Our staff recently experimented with outdoor freezing. This occurred in
south-central Wisconsin in late May to mid-June, with outdoor temperatures
exceeding 90 F on some days. We had a high volume of large objects (furniture
size) that needed immediate treatment, so we rented a large freezer semitrailer
and parked it on our grounds for a month (padlocked, refueled several times—no
electricity needed). The trailer maintained temperatures between roughly -12
and -23, which we confirmed with two Bluetooth HOBO monitors. Despite being
parked in full sunlight, the trailer was able to cool down to those temps very
quickly, and then acclimated to ambient temperatures gradually enough upon
treatment completion so as not to damage artifacts.

To answer your question, I think your plan is feasible with the right budget.
Free-standing outdoor freezer units are out there in the market. (EX:

Hi,
For a recent exhibition where there would be raw wood items (dugout canoe and
support blocks) that had been sitting outside we used one.
We rented an 8 x 20' Walk in and had it parked at our loading dock. We had a
padlock on the door and we have rotating Security. It was in the hot sun on
concrete and it worked very well, though I think shade would be beneficial.
We had a Bluetooth thermometer inside to monitor so we didn’t have to open all
the time to check. Maybe you could slowly raise the temp of the freezer until
it reaches Gallery temp?
You need to have an electrical source that it powerful enough. Our electricians
were able to put in a new breaker for it.

Cheers!

Good afternoon list,

I hope you're all well.

I am currently writing an IPM instructions document for our institution. One of
the questions that often comes up is at what point do you have enough pests to
qualify for interventive treatment? Whilst attempting to get to zero pests is
lovely I'm not sure that's something that can be realistically achieved in most
institutions.

So, if for example you have a catch of silverfish in one of your traps, how
many would one catch before saying you have too many and need to put down some
pesticide? 5/10/20? Considering the blunder traps are only a small
representation of floor space in the store if you have say 10 silverfish in the
traps I assume that the amount of silverfish in the store overall is much
greater.

Does anyone have a hard cut off line for what is a reasonable amount of pest
activity or a "manageable" amount? Or if you just have some thoughts on the
topic that would be great!

Thank you so much,

Hello Rehan;

While it isn't training per se, you might want to share the following National
Park Service [NPS] museum publications with staff. :

  1. NPS Museum Handbook, Part I: Chapter 5: Biological Infestations at
https://www.nps.gov/museum/publications/MHI/CHAP5.pdf

  2. NPS Conserve O Gram technical leaflets
https://www.nps.gov/museum/publications/conserveogram/cons_toc.html

3 /11 Identifying Museum Insect Pest
Damage
https://www.nps.gov/museum/publications/conserveogram/03-11.pdf

3/12 Identifying Mouse and Rat Damage in Museum
Collections

https://www.nps.gov/museum/publications/conserveogram/3-12-COG-Rodent-Damage.pdf

Joan

Hi,

Does anyone have any recommendations for introduction to IPM for Museums course
that are online?

I am looking for something aimed at conservators/people with a background of
working in collections, with a focus on identifying infestations in collection
material. I want to give conservation staff conducting gallery checks a
background in looking out for the signs that a specimen/object is infested.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Rehan

Hi All!
Do you have clear, relatively high-res close-up images of mouse, rat, and/or
cockroach droppings that you would allow to be published for educational
purposes? If so, I want ‘em!

Bonus points if there is a scale of some sort (from something official-looking
to something ubiquitous, like a dime or pencil). Double bonus points if you
have clear images of all three, all with scale.

What’cha got?? Feel free to reply directly to me. Not sure everyone on the list
wants poop pics/fecal footage/droppings drama…
